Each goal in Cascade can be assigned a unique 'Tracking Type'. Goal tracking is set up on a goal-by-goal basis, meaning that even goals that are connected to others can be tracked differently. In fact, using different tracking types makes progress updates a smooth and efficient process.

Cascade provides five basic tracking types and also has the ability to integrate with other systems like Excel to update goals. The tracking type of a goal can be determined when the goal is created, or edited once the goal has been launched. In order to change the tracking type of an existing goal:

  • Click on the title of the goal you want to change
  • Click on the current tracking type in the sidebar for that goal
  • Select the desired tracking type from the list

The five in-house Cascade tracking types are:

  1. Manual Slider: the user adds progress directly to this goal
    • Progress can be added using the slider bar, or by manually typing the progress into the textbox above the slider bar.
  2. Sum of Child Goal: progress on this goal is automated, and is calculated by adding up the progress of the goals beneath it
    • All child goals beneath a parent set to track as Sum of Child Goal must use the same unit of measurement in order for the calculations to work.
  3. Child Goal Average: progress on this goal is automated, and is calculated by the average progress of the goals beneath it
    • Parent and child goals can use different units of measurement.
  4. Weighted Child Goal Average: progress on this goal is automated, and is calculated by both the average progress of the goals beneath it and the weight that has been assigned to each of those goals
    • 'Goal Weighting' must be turned on in order for this option to work, which is not something we often recommend. All child goals must have a weight applied for the calculations to be accurate when using this tracking type.
  5. Task Completion: progress on this goal is automated, and is calculated based on the completion of tasks in a checklist attached to the goal
    • Users can add tasks to any goal, but those tasks will only contribute to the completion of a goal if the tracking type is set to Task Completion.

Tracking types can be pre-determined for a particular goal template, meaning that any goal using that goal template will automatically be created with that specific tracking type pre-selected.
