The Effective Rights tab shows you the access rights that have been assigned to a specific user.
It is commonly used as a troubleshooting method to help locate where a block has occurred, which may prevent a User from accessing a folder or document they should normally have access to.
To check a User's Effective Rights:
-
- Navigate to your Repository and select a folder or document.
- Right click and choose Show Security.
The Access Rights window shows you the User or Group that has security access to the folder or document, where they have inherited this right, and the Scope of their access, meaning do they have the right to see the folder, subfolder and documents within.
To help troubleshoot potential issues with a User's security access:
-
- Choose the Effective Rights tab.
- Click Select another trustee.
The default trustee is always the Current Connection, but you can delete this, and choose the trustee that is having access issues instead. The trustee can be either a User or a Group.
Click Expand All to view each right in detail.
As an example, a trustee may be granted full View rights, including Browse, Read and See Annotations. They might also be granted the See Through Redactions right, however cannot Delete a file or access Records or Security.
These granted rights are greyed out, meaning you cannot change these settings from here. These are referred to as Inherited Rights.
Clicking View detailed inheritance information shows you:
-
- Where the right has been allowed in the repository.
- Where the right has been denied in the repository.
These rights could be assigned at a specific folder level, or inherited by another Group.
The Effective Rights tab lets you isolate a single User or Group, which helps in troubleshooting issues such as conflicting access rights.
