How do I Create a Gantt Chart in Cascade?

Click ‘Track’ > Click ‘Snapshots’ > Click ‘+ New Snapshot’ > When creating snapshot ensure you select ‘Timeline’ with the ‘Select Columns’ area > Adjust the column width to allow room for your Gantt chart > Click ‘Save’ > Click 'Generate'

There are several ways you can create or view a Gantt chart in Cascade to help you assess your timeline of projects and evaluate where you might be project-heavy and required to reallocate resources or defer projects. Below we will detail how you can view a Gantt chart on your planner page, create a snapshot to view/share/export a Gantt chart, or create a dashboard to view/share/export a Gantt chart.

*For exporting a Gantt chart to paper, we recommend using the snapshot version. The dashboard version is designed for in-system use, and while it can be exported and looks great digitally, does not reproduce well on paper.

How to view a Gantt chart on a planning page - Utilising the Local Government Framework, your strategic, corporate, department, and governance plans will provide you lists of goals/projects you or your team will be undertaking. On each planning page, you have the ability to view the page in either the ‘List’ or ‘Gantt’ views. The steps below will show you how to access the Gantt view:

  • Click ‘Planner’ (Assuming you have just logged in and have the ‘Goal Deck’ page in front of you – if you have already navigated to a plan page, skip to the 3rd dot point)
  • Click on the plan you wish to view from the dropdown menu
  • Near the top left of the planning page you will see two tabs, ‘List’ and ‘Gantt’, click on ‘Gantt’
  • The initial Gantt chart shows an abbreviated timeline which is good if you wish to view your short-term projects and requirements, however, if you wish to view every project’s full timeline, click on the ‘Show Full Timeline’ button near the right of the screen above the Gantt chart
  • If you also wish to view the current progress of each goal, click ‘Show Progress’ and each Gantt chart bar will be coloured in to the current level of completion. The colours displayed represent the status of each goal. Eg. On Track, Behind, Complete
  • If you wish to return to the list view, click 'List'

  • Within the ‘Select Columns’ area (3rd solid bar down the screen – click anywhere on the bar to expand it) ensure that the ‘Timeline’ checkbox is selected (in the column to the right) *The timeline checkbox enables a Gantt chart within your snapshot and for effective visibility, should take up around a third of your snapshot column space so you might wish to uncheck other checkboxes to create space for your Gantt chart
  • Once you have selected which columns you wish to represent in your snapshot, you can edit the order by dragging and dropping, and edit the column size by clicking and dragging the column width as you would alter the column width on an Excel spreadsheet
  • Click ‘Save’ to enter a snapshot title and save it to your 'My Snapshots' folder

How to create a Gantt chart using dashboards

  • Click the ‘Track’ icon from the menu near the top left of the screen
  • Click ‘Dashboards’ from the menu
  • Click the ‘Dashboards’ dropdown menu near the top right of the screen
  • Click ‘Add Dashboard’ and then ‘Create a New Dashboard’

If you are unfamiliar with the dashboard functionality and wish to learn more, please view this article detailing How do I create a Dashboard in Cascade?

  • Click the ‘Add a New Widget’ button
  • Click ‘Table’ from the custom list on the right to select a table widget. This will allow you to create a Gantt chart. Once you have clicked on the 'Table' option a 'Setting up: Table'  sidebar will appear to the right of the screen
  • Within the sidebar, use the filters to select which goals you would like to include in the table. The default setting is ‘My Goals’, however, if you would prefer goals from a specific plan or goal template, expand the 'Select Data' area and clear the highlighted ‘My Goals’ button filter, then click on the '+ Add Filter' button to create a filter to select your desired plan, area, owner, organization

Dashboards can present a maximum of 500 goals. If your filter query exceeds this you will receive a notification and have to refine your filter search

  • Within the ‘Display Columns:’ field, you must include the ‘Timeline’ option which will enable a Gantt chart on your table. As with the snapshot, for effective visibility, the ‘Timeline’ column should take up around a quarter to a third of your total table column space so you might wish to uncheck or limit your other selections
  • Once you have selected which columns you wish to represent in your dashboard, click 'save' at the bottom of the 'Setting up: Table' sidebar. This will create your Gantt chart dashboard on the main screen. (*If the 'Save' button is not coloured/working, you might need to add a title before it will let you save)
  • You can edit the column order by clicking on the column title and dragging and dropping them into your preferred order. You can also edit the column width by clicking and dragging just to the right of the arrows located to the right of the column headings
  • If you wish to export or share the widget, use the buttons in the top right of the screen
